Paris. Nina, unattached and unemployed, sleeps outside with her five year-old son Enzo. One day their wanderings bring them to Versailles, where in the woods near the castle lives Damien, in an isolated shack. Nina spends the night with him, then disappears. In the early morning, Damien finds the child alone, abandoned by his mother. As the days go by, the two discover each other, come to terms, and become attached to one another. Their bond proves to be as total as their poverty. But one day they have to leave the shack behind... By delving into the intimate relationship between three “asocial” characters, bathed in the forest’s feeble light, Pierre Schoeller delivers a modern melodrama, tenderly and profoundly revisiting the universal tale of Chaplin’s The Kid in a film where the forest functions as the symbol of a state of nature totally untouched by society. Carried by the grace of its actors, Versailles is a deeply moving social fable about humanity’s infancy and the birth of society, presented in the “Un Certain Regard” section at Cannes.
